Encaustic Workshops with Heidi Beal

Join Heidi Beal in a fun, inspiring, and supportive environment for one of her awesome workshops! Whether you are a painter or work in photography, collage, or sculpture, you will love to add the unique Encaustic magic to your work! No experience is needed. You only need to bring your creative self!  Once the ancient medium of the Greeks 2500 years ago, Encaustic Painting has experienced huge popularity in the contemporary art community. Hot molten beeswax, pigments, and tree resin make up your palette as you create luminous texture with an infinite number of techniques!

In Heidi's encaustic workshops, you will experience a comprehensive approach to encaustic painting, giving you everything you need to begin your encaustic journey. Heidi will encourage students to learn & experiment with a vast variety of encaustic techniques, creating sample panels as well as completed art which they will take home for future reference.

Integrated within all of her offered workshops, Heidi will encourage students to find their unique voices, help them to identify directions for cohesive bodies of work, and assist them in removing creative blocks.  This is done in a group setting, and private consults for returning students as time permits.

Heidi is known for her power-packed workshops, filled with tons of demos of generous information!  Come and be a part of it ALL!

Encaustic Workshops at Heidi's home Studio in Bakersfield, California
Over my many years of teaching, I have come to understand the value of learning and networking that happens during an art workshop.  Lifelong friendships are built, amazing new perspectives on oneself are expanded, new goals are set, the professional bar of excellence is raised, and the context of oneself within their art community is better understood.  Although much can be had in the studio, often, these rich experiences happen over lunch with your teacher, sharing a hotel room with another student, or taking a meditative walk during a break.   I also know that food and lodging costs can take their toll on investing in one’s art practice.  As a result, many of my out of town students seek out more affordable options to expensive and lonely hotel rooms.  These needs of my students have shaped my lifelong dream to provide a residential learning environment for my encaustic workshops.

My comprehensive encaustic workshops at my home studio in downtown Bakersfield offers just this kind of experience.  In a relaxing and community environment, students will have the opportunity to take encaustic workshops with me while sharing meals, lodging, and extended studio time onsite.  My 109 year old home will be your home for nurturing those creative juices and the ole brick carriage house out back will be your studio.

On Friday & Saturday, we will focuses our attention on printing on paper with pigmented beeswax. One of a kind prints are created using simple mark making with pigment bars, brushes, silicone subtractive tools, wooden print blocks, and stencils.  Prints can be single-pass images which leave areas of the paper open, or they may be overprinted many times creating layered depth of color. Clear or lightly pigmented wax makes thinner paper translucent, allowing for light to come through. We will explore working with different temperatures, different types and sizes of paper, full bleed prints, and clean plate prints.

On Sunday, we will introduce mixed media elements and different types of mark making implements.  This is also an opportunity to work on projects, hone in your skills, and work a little larger.

WAX & PAPERMAKING 3 DAY WORKSHOP:
Over two thousand years ago, while artisans in the East were making paper, Greco-Roman Egyptian painters were adding pigments to molten beeswax and painting the likenesses of the aristocracy. Today, artists are rediscovering both art forms and combining them in new ways that are fresh and exciting.

We will gather at Heidi's home Thursday afternoon after 3pm. Dinner will be served at 5pm as we get acquainted. Starting on Friday, we will explore papermaking, discovering how paper can be wrapped, glued, embossed, collaged, filled with inclusions and pulp painted. We will also learn how to make paper, creating dimensional paper supports for use in subsequent days. By Saturday, the paper dries as the wax heats up! While enhancing the paper surface with molten beeswax and a variety of mixed media approaches, we will be working with wood burners, torches, screens, stamps, watercolor, wax glazes, oil sticks, and many other mark-making tools.
Students will come away from this inspirational weekend with new skills, a supply of paper supports, pulp for at-home studio work, reference samples, and perhaps finished work that is ready to hang.

SCULPTURAL FORM 2 DAY WORKSHOP:
The act of manipulating natural materials to create three-dimensional form is intrinsic to human nature. Sculpture has been with us since pre-historic times, where objects were created to embody rituals of hunting and fertility and religious worship of the gods. Today, we still work in those same processes—modeling, carving and construction—while moving beyond the more traditional materials of clay, stone and bark.

In this workshop, you are invited to explore the intensely rewarding experience of working sculpturally using techniques that can be used to create encaustic-compatible sculpture. We will explore a variety of sculptural processes including: carving EPS foam and giving it a paper skin; working with wire mesh and plaster; mulberry paper and wire assemblage, encaustic surface design techniques and encaustic pouring. Students will see demonstrations in all processes and be able to select those processes that best fits his/her concept to explore.

If you are not already attending the previous workshop over the weekend, be sure to arrive Sunday night after 5pm.  A light dinner will be served at approximately 6pm.
