Encaustic Comprehensive with Photography and Collage
LEVEL: Beginning or Experienced COST: $525
This 3 1/2 day workshop is the perfect starting place to learn encaustic painting for the first time or refresh skills you may already have. While beginners learn the fundamentals, experienced students will have the opportunity to work on more advanced projects. We will then focus on integrating existing images with encaustic. Techniques taught will include collage using a tack iron, photo underlays, photo transfers, embedding tissue paper prints, pours, and joss paper transfers. Students may bring their photographic images, other found images or they may use visual materials that are provided. Rather than merely painting encaustic on top of photographs, our goal is to integrate existing images with the wax, creating a cohesive painting with meaningful content. Encaustic Comprehensive with Texture, Carving, & Mixed Media
LEVEL: Beginning or Experienced COST: $525
This 3 1/2 day workshop is the perfect place to learn encaustic painting for the first time or refresh skills you may already have. While beginners learn the fundamentals, experienced students will have the opportunity to work on more advanced projects. We will then focus our attention on building rich texture with diverse brush work, stencils, stamps, and carving deep into the wax surface. On the final day, we will introduce exciting mixed media materials such as R&F oil sticks, shellac burns, wall board compound substrates, graphite, carbon, Pan Pastels, joss paper, gold leaf foil, and so much more. This is also a good time to work on a project and put to practice some of the techniques you have just learned. See Heidi about adding additional Studio days ($150 ea)

Encaustic Monotype (encaustic & mixed media on paper)
LEVEL: Beginning or Experienced however most students opt to take the above courses first COST: $525
Using the Roland Hot Box, this 3 1/2 day workshop focuses our attention on printing on paper with pigmented beeswax. One-of-a-kind wax paintings on paper are created by painting directly onto the hot plate, using pigment bars, brushes, silicone subtractive tools, wooden print blocks, stencils, and more. Prints can be single-pass images which leave areas of the paper open, or they may be overprinted many times creating layered depth of color. We will explore working with different temperatures, different types and sizes of paper, creating paper translucency, full bleed prints, prints using separate plates, and cold composition. On the final day, we will introduce mixed media elements and different types of mark making implements. This is also an opportunity to work on projects, hone your skills, and work a little larger. In all of these workshops, you will experience articulate demos as well as a personal and professional approach to encaustic painting.  Heidi’s goal is for you to learn everything you need to know to begin your encaustic practice in your own studio. Health and safety practices, economic use of supplies, and creating with a purpose provides the foundation for all of Heidi’s workshops.  Within a small intimate group of up to 6 students, you will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of techniques, creating sample panels as well as completed art to take home. The “sticker approach” to learning which she developed as well as her encaustic handbook, eliminates the need to take notes! Her teaching approach enables students to focus on painting and having fun, instead of being a secretary.

TESTIMONIALS

“During my many years of teaching, I have come to understand the value of learning and networking that happens during an art workshop. Lifelong friendships are built, amazing new perspectives on oneself are expanded, new goals are set, the professional bar of excellence is raised, and the context of oneself within their art community is better understood. Although much can be had in the studio, often these rich experiences happen over lunch with your teacher, sharing a room with another student, or taking a meditative walk during a break."
